New England Patriots fans are running out of patience with second-year quarterback Mack Jones. After two terrible drives to open the game against the Cincinnati Bengals, fans began booing the offense and calling for Jones to be benched in favor of rookie Bailey Zappé.
The game started with two punts for the Patriots when they had none. After another three-out, the Zapp chants in the stadium got louder. The Bengals took a 12-0 lead on two touchdown drives, with Joe Barrow completing 100% of their passes during that stretch.
Mack Jones regressed badly in his second season after a solid rookie year in which he led New England to the playoffs. He had to overcome Tom Brady’s shadow, but he did a good job in his first year. However, things went downhill after Matt Patricia took over as offensive coordinator.
Who is Bailey Zapp? Patriots fans want the rookie quarterback to play
Zappé is a rookie quarterback out of Western Kentucky who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He has already started two games in New England this season due to injuries to Jones and veteran backup quarterback Brian Hoyer.
Zapp threw five touchdowns and three interceptions in four appearances in 2022 — he also sacked Hoyer and Jones at different points in the season. The offense has been more functional with him under center, and with Jones struggling massively over the last few weeks, Patriots fans seem eager to give the rookie a shot at true leadership.
