Bill Belichick Didn’t Think Mack Jones Could Hit a 55-yard Hail Mary | Jobs Vox

There were many ingredients that led to a broken recipe that turned into a disastrous finish for the Patriots. One of the reasons Ramondre Stevenson and Jacoby Meyers were throwing the ball to back-to-back bad sides was that Bill Belichick didn’t think his quarterback could throw the ball forward far enough for Hail Mary.

The ball was snapped at the Patriots 45 yard line, 55 yards from the end zone. After going back and assuming the receivers would be in the end zone and not on the goal line, Mack Jones would have to throw the ball 60 yards in the air. At Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, there is no wind to help or hurt shooting.

Jones has one career pass for 50 yards — a 75-yard touchdown to Kendrick Bourne — and on that one, Jones threw the ball 30 yards in the air and Bourne ran the final 45 after the catch.

Belichick didn’t think Jones could carry the ball far enough on a pass when asked if the Hail Mary was an option.

“I couldn’t throw it that far,” Belichick said.

Jones turned the same question to his coach.

“I think Coach Belichick makes a coaching decision there,” he said. “So we’re paying a lot of attention to it and we’re working very hard on it. We just have to perform better as players.”
