232 books are banned in New Jersey prisons.
Among the banned literature for those behind bars is 101 Things to Do with Mac & Cheese.
It seems to have more to do with metal spiral binding than what you can do with a regular box of macaroni and cheese (although prison food might make one crave herb macaroni and cucumber salad, chili mac, baked tomato macaroni, and grilled macaroni and cheese. ). But the Marshall Project’s report on what’s not allowed in New Jersey’s prison system sometimes reads like a list from a typical college dorm bookshelf.
There’s “Absolutely Green Lantern” and “Absolutely Everything WWE,” “Home Renovation,” and “The Marvel Encyclopedia.” Some were about drugs, like “Start Your Own Cannabis Business” and “Cocaine Nation.”
The Marshall Project asked every state prison system in the country for book policies and lists of prohibited publications, and found that about half of the states reported maintaining such lists, which contained more than 50,000 titles.
Certainly, a list of books compiled by a nonprofit journalism site that focuses on criminal justice had titles that might raise red flags for prison administrators. Many titles on the New Jersey list dealt with sex, violence or crime, such as Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders.
The list also included Advanced Survival and 33 Strategies of War, described as a comprehensive guide to the sophisticated social game of everyday life, informed by the most ingenious and effective military principles of war.
One of the banned books was “The Great Prison Break”.
