The LG Twins of the Korean Baseball Organization announced that outfielder Austin Dean signed the annual contract. (Hat tip Dan Kurtz of MyKBO.net.) Dean gets a $100,000 signing bonus, a $400,000 salary for the season, and is eligible for another $200,000 in bonuses.
Dean (turned 29 in October) is headed to South Korea after playing 11 seasons in North American pro ball as a fourth-round pick by the Marlins in the 2012 draft. After making his MLB debut in 2018, Dean has seen some action in each of the last five Major League seasons, but his 98 games with Miami in 2018-19 represent the majority of his major league experience. The Marlins traded Dean to the Cardinals in January 2020, and since then he has played in just 28 MLB games. That includes three games with San Francisco in 2022 after the Giants announced Dean was off waivers from the Cards last season.
With 365 career plate appearances in the show, Dean has 11 home runs and a .228/.286/.390 slash line. Unfortunately for Dean, the dreaded “Quad-A” tag may come into play – he hasn’t had much success in the majors, hitting .301/.375/.508 with 45 home runs in 1,134 PA in Triple-A. level. This production at least helped Dean get a few more appearances in the big leagues, which could bode well for him in KBO leagues where he’ll have more hits.
as noted Yonhap News’ Jeeho Yoo, the LG Twins now fill three roster spots for non-Korean players. Dean joined the right-handers Casey Kelly and Adam Plutko Kelly returns for his fifth season and Plutko for his second in the Twins’ international lineup.
