SM scholar Kirti Baguio recalled what she told herself just before she took her 2022 civil engineering board exams. Those simple words were the last dose of inspiration he needed as he recounted years of sacrifice and hard work for himself and his family.
Looking back, Baguio wasn’t always on top. He came from a humble family who worked doubly hard to make ends meet. His father worked as a contract carpenter while his mother was a salesperson. While both had jobs, their combined income was not enough to fund his and his sister’s college education.
Although the eldest of the Baguio family provided financial support, the young man took it upon himself to find a way to support his schooling. Since he worked as a part-time tutor for high school students, he applied for the SM Foundation Scholarship and was admitted.
Baguio took heart in his father’s family dream of being an engineer.
“My father’s family worked as laborers in construction. And it was always his dream to have an engineer in our family. So, I decided to take up civil engineering. It was an opportunity to challenge my skills in maths. There was also a method, a subject I’m good at.”
“When I started studying at the Far Eastern University (FEU) Institute of Technology it was difficult. Every day, I had to travel about two to three hours from Caloocan to Manila because we had no money for rent. But Since I was young, my family’s situation has been difficult. This inspired me to dream of a better life,” the scholar said.
