Lieutenant Governor (LG) Vinay Kumar Saxena has approved the Delhi Police’s proposal to appoint special prosecutors to represent the state in the Shraddha Valkar murder case, officials said.

Senior advocates Madhukar Pandey and Amit Prasad will represent the Delhi Police and the state government, sources in the LG’s office said.

“LG VK Saxena has approved Delhi Police’s proposal to appoint Special Public Prosecutors to represent the state in the trial court in FIR No. 659 dt. 10.11.2022 registered u/s 365/302/201 IPC, PS Mehrauli. This case is related to Shraddha’s gruesome murder case. Advocates Madhukar Pandey and Amit Prasad will represent the Delhi Police as special public prosecutors in the matter,” the LG’s office said.

Special prosecutors (SPOs) are often assigned to sensitive cases. Earlier, former state chief secretary Anshu Prakash appointed the SPP to handle cases related to the 2018 attacks, the February 2020 Delhi riots and the violence that erupted during farmers’ protests in January.

According to police, 28-year-old Aaftab Poonawala allegedly killed his girlfriend Shraddha Walkar, 27, at her apartment in south Delhi’s Chhatarpur Pahadi on May 18 this year. He allegedly dismembered her body over the next three days and then disposed of it in forested areas in south Delhi, Gurugram and Faridabad.

Saxena agreed on a day when the Delhi Police cited DNA test results to prove that some of the bones found during the search were those of Walkar.

On December 9, a local court sentenced Punawala to 14 days in jail.
