Belkin quietly introduced a new iPhone mount with MagSafe last week designed for Mac desktops and displays you use with your Mac, allowing you to take advantage of the Continuity Camera on those devices. We picked one up and thought we’d give it a try MacRumors Readers who are thinking about ordering.
The Belkin iPhone Mount for Mac Desktop and Display is quite similar to the Mac notebook mount that was released earlier this year, but there are some differences in design and pricing. First of all, it costs $40 instead of $30, probably because the mounting part is large enough to accommodate different sized displays.
Design-wise, the lip of the mount fits over the edge of the display or iMac, and then there’s an adjustable arm that secures it to the back of the device. The iPhone is attached to the mount using MagSafe and can be placed in portrait or landscape mode. There are also adjustable viewing angles that you can use by tilting the bracket, which is not available in the MacBook version.
Because of the tilt option and the general height of the iMac or external display, the desktop mount is much better than Desk View, a feature that lets you show your desktop during a video chat. With the MacBook version, Desk View is much more limited, but you can see a lot more of the desktop with Desktop Dock, which makes it more useful.
The Belkin Display and Mac Desktop Mount is especially useful for Mac Studio or Mac mini owners who use it with a Studio Display or a third-party display that doesn’t have a webcam because it adds webcam functionality. There’s also a 1/4-inch tripod screw on the mount, so you can use it with a mini tripod if you want, adding even more versatility.
The Belkin iPhone Dock for MagSafe Desktop and Display is available online from the Apple Store for $40. It has been ordered and will arrive at the end of January to the beginning of February.
