Hey, have you ever heard of OnePlus? Well, the typical Macworld reader probably has, because they’re more into technology than most people. But in the Apple community at large, it wouldn’t be surprising if the majority hadn’t heard of it Android Phone and accessories manufacturer. But we may all be hearing a little more about them soon.
That’s because OnePlus has partnered with Keychron on the Mac’s mechanical keyboard. Not one of those pesky “Mac-compatible” keyboards with Windows key layouts and Mac-compatible software drivers. According to OnePlus, this keyboard is “designed to work seamlessly” with the Mac, with a layout that “matches the MacBook keyboard.” We assume this means it will have control and command keys, although OnePlus says it will also work with Windows and Linux.
The layout of the MacBook is definitely one way to keep Mac users interested. Another feature that’s piqued interest is its dual-gasket clasp design, which OnePlus says “makes typing a pleasurable motion.” Also, the keyboard’s product page says that the keys are “mute”. OnePlus doesn’t directly say it’s quieter than Apple’s Magic Keyboard, but that seems to be the goal.
And if you need one more reason to check out a Mac keyboard from OnePlus – we’ve mentioned that they make it Android Phones and Accessories?— The keyboard will have an aluminum body like Apple’s own Magic Keyboard. If it’s similar to other Keychron keyboards, that might mean it was a strong design, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. OnePlus also promises customizable features like hot-swappable switches and open source software.
Sounds like an interesting keyboard, and keyboards in general are very subjective to each individual when it comes to usability and preference. Some people read about these features and get excited, others shrug their shoulders indifferently. One question all Mac users have is, can OnePlus successfully introduce the nuances of the Mac experience to their keyboards? We have to wait and see.
OnePlus is one of the most popular Android brands, building phones that rival premium phones from Google and Samsung at significantly lower prices. The company isn’t saying how much the keyboard will cost, but we’re guessing it will be affordable and likely cheaper than the Magic Keyboard.
The OnePlus keyboard is currently in development (no photo of the actual keyboard has yet been revealed), with an official launch in February and release dates in March or April, just in time for the rumored Mac bonza at Apple’s annual spring event. coincidence? We have to wait and see.
