One Lakh Crore Mcap Club crosses 50 for the first time | Jobs Vox

[ad_1]

The number of companies with a minimum market capitalization of Rs 1 lakh crore has increased to 53 in 2022. These companies together account for about 60 percent of BSE Mcap.

The number of companies with a minimum market capitalization of Rs 1 lakh crore crossed the half-century mark for the first time, even as the benchmarks yielded sub-three percent returns for 2022. That compares to a 69 percent increase seen in 2021. The elite club of 53 firms boasts a combined market capitalization of Rs 164.2 trillion, which is 58 percent of the total market capitalization of all BSE-listed companies.

Certainly, the pandemic-led selloff in 2020 saw the number of such firms drop to 29 from 31 last year. New entrants to the list include Coal India, Adani Power, Ambuja Cements, Britannia Industries, Siemens and Bajaj Auto, while Tech Mahindra, Divi’s Laboratories and Zomato were kicked out as high-flying tech stocks intensified during the year.

Interestingly, while Divi’s Laboratories misses the million mark in 2022; after staying with the club for the previous two years, Coal India is back after a two-year hiatus. Shares of Divi’s Laboratories have lost nearly a quarter of their value in 2022, marking its first underperformance since 2016. The stock gained as much as 35 percent in 2018 when the benchmark Nifti50 returned a negative 5.5 percent.

While a 65 percent correction from the peak resulted in an exit for Zomato, collapses of similar height in shares of PaiTM and Nikaa did not see any of the listed platform stocks. Both PaiTM and Nikaa briefly breached the basic market cap of Rs 1 lakh in November last year. Among the newly floated firms, India’s LIC holds the fort with a market capitalization of Rs 4.2 lakh crore.

Moreover, as many as 11 companies from the Nifti50 are not represented in the list. Among the Sensek constituents, Tech Mahindra and IndusInd Bank have a market capitalization of less than Rs 1 lakh crore each.
