LG Innotek: Develops Two New Hybrid Lenses for High-Performance Autonomous Driving | Jobs Vox

LG Innotek (CEO John Cheol-dong) said on the 14th that it has successfully developed a new type of high-performance hybrid lens for autonomous driving that increases price competitiveness and reduces size and thickness compared to products on the market.

Cameras are a key component of autonomous driving solutions as they help detect driver movements.

The company says it has developed new lenses for driver monitoring systems (DMS) and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Their distinguishing feature is that the company cross-applied plastic and glass inside the lens, while other lenses use only glass to prevent structural deformation due to temperature changes or external factors.

Specifically, the company is the first in the industry to use plastic materials for high-resolution (8Mp) ADAS lenses. The company was able to reduce the size and price of the lens by using plastic. The company says the new lens will give automakers more flexibility in vehicle design as in-car cameras are increasingly used.

“High-performance lenses are 20-30 percent thinner than all-glass products. The thinner they are, the more freedom they have for interior and exterior design,” said a company representative. “The higher the level of self-driving, the more sensors will be used, so it’s important to reduce the size of the components.”

The company says the performance of its new lens has been boosted to match that of an all-glass lens, thanks to technology that ensures stable performance regardless of temperature.

LG Innotek hopes to lead the in-cabin camera lens market. Camera lenses used in autonomous vehicles are built into camera modules. These are key components of autonomous driving for driver assistance and driver recognition. In Europe, it is recommended that all vehicles be equipped with DMS after 2025.

According to Strategy Analytics, the global market for self-driving cameras is expected to grow by about 17 percent annually, from 4.2 trillion won in 2021 to 7.9 trillion won ($6 billion) in 2025.

“We hope that LG Innotek’s high-performance hybrid lens will overcome with innovative technology and create a huge wave in the market,” said Kang Min-seok, CEO of LG Innotek.
