Just weeks after the San Francisco tech company laid off employees earlier (and just days before Christmas), a key division of Elon Musk’s Twitter has reportedly been gutted.

The engineers in Twitter’s infrastructure division were fired via an email notice on Friday evening. The extent of the layoffs is unclear, as well as the severance benefits of affected employees. The news of the layoffs was first reported by The Information.

The last few weeks of Elon Musk’s reign have been dominated by mayhem. Twitter issued mass suspensions of high-profile journalists who were critical of Musk’s decision to suspend accounts tracking private jets or any real-time data; The Twitter Spaces feature was briefly shut down shortly after Musk entered Twitter Space, with at least one of the banned journalists being hosted by BuzzFeed reporter Katie Notopoulos; The platform suspended accounts that shared links and usernames of Mastodon, Instagram, and other competing social media platforms (and swiftly reversed that decision); And more recently, Musk sent out a poll asking whether he should stop going on Twitter, which got a majority “yes”.

Since Musk’s acquisition earlier this year, The Information estimates that about 75% of Twitter’s workforce has been laid off. Conference rooms at the San Francisco headquarters have been converted into dormitories. Twitter no longer has a public relations department.
