The first update to Rapid Security Response for Mac is here.
As spotted by MacRumors, Apple has released macOS Security Response 13.2 (a), a quick security response for Macs running macOS 13 Ventura. The software update was released earlier today and is available for those running the latest version of macOS Ventura.
This is the first time we’ve seen a quick security response for the Mac, and it’s currently unclear whether it’s related to an actual security issue or another test Apple is running for the feature. The report notes that the updates are “applied automatically when the Mac restarts and are also added to Safari when the Safari app is exited and then reopened.”
Fast security response has also come to iPhone
While this is the first time we’ve seen a quick security response on a Mac, it’s not the first time we’ve seen Apple release one. The company has already released two updates to the iPhone, but both also appear to have been tests to ensure the feature is ready for prime time.
Until now, Apple has been able to address any and all security issues that may affect its users through its larger software updates. This has historically created security vulnerabilities because users had to wait for larger software updates to fix security vulnerabilities that were sometimes actively exploited in the wild.
With Rapid Security Response, Apple tries to solve this problem by creating a system that solves time-sensitive security problems with its own independent updates. This will allow the company to protect users from security vulnerabilities faster than the previous process.
We’ll have to wait for the first major security issue to emerge to see how Apple does with its first RSR deployment in the wild.
