We’ve come to the end of the year, and just like last year, that means it’s time to look ahead to what 2023 holds. These are my fearless predictions! Well, maybe a little bit of fear. Don’t look me straight in the eyes. I’m so sensitive.
While this year’s Mac lineup was a little smaller than I expected—perhaps due to supply chain issues—I doubt that will lead to huge 2023 for Mac. And on the iPad side, while I look forward to a quiet year, there’s still a wild card that could make some noise.
The Rise of the Super Macs
Apple promised to complete Apple’s silicon transition in two years, and that was two years ago, so…barring any surprise Mac year-end announcements, we have to assume that the final pieces of Apple’s silicon puzzle will be the company’s 2023 Mac that part.
This means that 2023 will finally see the arrival of more advanced versions of the M2 processor that the company unveiled this summer. And while the M2 is definitely a small step up from the already impressive M1, I have a feeling that future high-end M2 variants will push the Mac to places it’s never been before.
Foundry
Let’s start with the easy stuff: Apple’s MacBook Pro and Mac mini updates were rumored to be originally slated for this fall, but they’ve apparently been pushed back to the new year. What a great way to start 2023!
We’re talking about the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros, which will be mostly unchanged on the outside from the redesigned 2021 models… but they’ll be powered by M2 Pro processors inside, taking the Mac laptop lineup to new heights.
As for the Mac mini, it’s finally time to ditch the Intel-based, space gray high-end Mac mini and replace it with a new model that uses the M2 Pro processor, bringing a Pro-tier chip to a desktop for the first time. time. (I’m guessing there will be both plain M2 and M2 Pro variations, while Mac Studio continues to cool things down with its M1 Max and M1 Ultra variants… for now.)
Then things start to heat up. Apple silicon Mac Pro! This will be the year. The real question is, what does a Mac Pro look like, powered by Apple’s silicon? Based on reports and common sense, I’m going to predict that this is a smaller version of the Intel Mac Pro design, complete with cheese holes and large looped handles, and there will be high-speed storage options inside. and network expansion as well as additional processing power. I don’t know if Apple is supporting extension standards or building something new. I bet the Mac Pro is more expandable than we feared, but less traditionally expandable than Intel-era Mac Pros.
Based on reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, everyone expects the Mac Pro to have an M2 Ultra chip. Think of it as a really, really big Mac Studio.
And what better pairing for a Mac Pro than Apple’s new external display? After years of predicting and being wrong, I finally got what Studio Display released in 2022. But rumors abound that Apple is working on an even more expensive model with Micro-LED lighting and ProMotion to replace the current Pro Display XDR. shame 2023 is a good time to make it happen.
Old friends and new
When you think about how important laptops are to the Mac line, it’s surprising how few model variations Apple offers. There are three MacBook Pros, but only one MacBook Air—two if you count the M1 generation model—still selling for $999. That’s a bit odd for Apple’s most popular Mac model, don’t you think?
If the rumors are true – and their denials are indeed very logical – we will see a second MacBook Air this year. Unfortunately, I don’t think my dream is a Smaller The model is more than 13 inches. Instead, it will be a larger model, a 15-incher, which will allow people to buy a larger laptop with a nice big screen without the performance of a MacBook Pro, which is unnecessary for most users.
IDG
This brings us to Apple’s flagship desktop Mac, the iMac. The 24-inch M1 iMac was released in 2021, but it’s a bit longer now. It’s time for an upgrade, with a new processor and maybe even new colors. But more exciting than the new iMac is the prospect of a new, larger model – let’s call it the iMac Pro – with a similar design but with a bigger screen. The iMac Pro also brings M2 Max and Ultra chip options to the iMac lineup for the first time.
This new iMac sounds great. If I hadn’t bought Mac Studio and Studio Display this year, I would have wanted one myself. Unfortunately, I’m sorry to inform you that it won’t be available in fun colors, because that’s not how Apple puts products under the Pro name. You’ll get it in silver or space gray, and if you’re very, very lucky, maybe midnight. It is.
iPad: Quiet Time
It really does feel like we’re in the doldrums for iPad hardware. Apple just revised the low-end iPad and iPad Pro, and those are products that only get updated every 18 months. I think the iPad Air is ready for M2 speed, but isn’t the M1 really better for this product?
So, will there be anything exciting in 2023 when it comes to the iPad? While I’m not entirely sure that will happen, I’m going to dive right in: There won’t be new 11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models, but 2023 will be when Apple introduces the next one. The design language of the iPad Pro generation in the form of a mega 15-inch iPad Pro (or iPad Studio?), packed with new accessories to make it an artist’s tool, work in a laptop setup, or even attach to an external display. Smaller iPad Pro models will have to wait until 2024 to pick up features from its big brother.
Apple
Now, what about the iPhone, wearables, and any new products? What will 2023 bring to Apple in these areas? For answers – and yes, we will treat my predictions as such answers For the purpose of these columns – you should check back here next week.
