2012 Mac Mini – Anyone using an old Mac Mini as a home server? | Jobs Vox

[ad_1]

Hi everybody,

Background:
As the subject says, looking for someone who has built an older mac mini at home? I just moved into a new house and I think having a central server (for photos, music, movies, etc.) makes a lot of sense. We are an “Apple Family” with MacBook laptops, iPhones, iPads, etc. to consume our media and surf the web.

2012 Mac Mini Specifications:
The 2012 Mac Mini I own is upgraded (16GB RAM, dual SSD kit, etc.) and I’d say it’s a pretty capable mini PC. This is the i5 version. I got it 4-5 years ago and actually used it as my main desktop computer for a few years.

goals:
I’m also in IT (DevOps Engineer) so at first I thought I might just set up a Linux (Ubuntu) home server and go from there. So, a few questions that immediately come to mind:

1. What OS should I use on my 2012 Mac Mini (macOS, Linux, etc.)?

2. Any specific “server” app I need to download and install?

3. I plan to run it headless (in a closet), so I need to make sure I can easily SSH / RDP / etc. in the device.

4. I don’t have any big goals other than central file/music/photo management

Thank you all in advance for your time and help, it is greatly appreciated.
