[ad_1]

The Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Ponies Girl’s Basketball team started the game 8-0, and while they didn’t play a great game in their first game in 10 days, they were able to shake off enough rust to hold onto a lead throughout the game in the Win-E- for a 43-33 victory against the Mac Patriots in a game played at Ralph Englestad Arena in Thief River Falls.

Warren-Alvarado-Oslo hadn’t played a game in a week and a half and were trying to knock off the rust. The Ponies seemed to do just that as they started the game 8-0. Kyle Nelson opened the game with a basket, Annika Magnuson made a free throw, Hannah Pederson made a three-pointer, and Magnuson made two free throws for an 8-0 lead. Win-E-Mac scored its first points of the game with 9:56 left in the half when Brett Duchamp made a free throw. The Ponies responded with five straight points on a basket by Reagan Mortimer, another basket by Nelson and a free throw by Ava Oberg for a 13-1 lead with six minutes left in the half. The Ponies led 19-4 at halftime before Win-E-Mac ended the half with a 6-0 run. Kallie Hand’s four points led the way, and Warren-Alvarado-Oslo led 19-10 at halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Win-E-Mac scored its first points of the second half when Shelby Mandt made two free throws to make it 19-12, the closest the Patriots have come since they trailed 8-1 early in the game. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo answered with layup baskets by Magnuson and Nelson before Annie Peterson’s free throw for a 24-12 lead with three minutes left in the half. Win-E-Mac put together a mini run to get within 26-18 before the Ponies responded with a three-point play by Nelson and a free throw by Hannah Pederson to get the lead back into double figures at 30-18. Leads at half time. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo would take a 38-22 lead before Win-E-Mac went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 38-30 with less than two minutes left in the game. Markelle Pederson stopped the Patriot run with a free throw, and Mortimer made a basket to make it 41-30. The Ponies won 43-33.

The Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Ponies will improve to 4-0 on the year and play at Red Lake County Central on Thursday, December 22nd. Win-E-Mac is down to 1-5 per year and will be on Mahnomen/Waubun. Tuesday, December 20.
