Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has blamed the frequent building collapses in the country on poor engineering quality. Therefore, he advocated that the members of the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) should be allowed to discharge their duties like other professionals.

The governor spoke yesterday when he received the chairman and top executive members of the NSE in Nigeria, who paid a courtesy call on him at Government House, Owerri.

The governor said: “Innocent lives will be lost every time a building collapses if engineers are allowed to do their job as professionals.”

He then challenged the NSE to intervene from time to time to save the country from those calamities. Uzodimma, who had earlier reminded the body that he is a corporate member of the organisation, reiterated his faith in the professional integrity of the NSE, and his firm belief that “engineering is everything about life and society.” He said: “For the development of Nigeria, the NSE must be at the forefront, and be fully involved.

Uzodimma regretted that, over the years, “different governments have not paid enough attention to engineers,” and that “quality manufacturing will undoubtedly help the nation develop.”

He also called for a partnership between the government and the NSE, especially in the area of monitoring and supervision. Earlier, NSE National President, Tasiu Woodile, said he was in Owerri for the 6th Engineer Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu lecture series, and admitted that upon entering the state, he saw “the governor doing quality work, especially on road construction.

Woodill lauded the governor’s achievements which, he said, are mostly people-oriented projects such as road infrastructure, information and communication technology (ICT) development, as well as women and youth empowerment.

He noted that the NSE is a non-partisan body, and urged the Governor to assist the organization in realizing his dream of having an engineering center in Owerri like Lagos, Benin, Uyo and Kano for the purpose of training young engineers. Help and providing them employment opportunities.
