Noel Whelan has backed Tottenham to complete a deal for the “impressive” Argentina star who could be a World Cup winner on Sunday.
The north London club have been heavily linked with Seagulls playmaker Alexis McAllister of late and his displays in Qatar have only added to the speculation.
The 23-year-old scored 5 goals in 14 Premier League appearances for the Seagulls before heading to the World Cup.
Since arriving in Qatar, McAllister has started five of Argentina’s six games in their run to the final against France and has scored since.
He is currently under contract with Brighton until 2025, having joined them in 2019 for just £7million.
McAllister’s form this season and in Qatar has prompted several clubs to show interest in securing his signature. Chief among them is Tottenham, Who wants to bring a creative midfielder on board.
It was recently reported that Spurs are ready to battle Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Juventus to land their player. However, it is thought that the player’s preference is to stay in England, where he can demand a higher salary.
And former Leeds forward Whelan can see Mc Allister Advancing in Conte’s starting 11.
She said Football Insider: “I have no doubt about it, I was very impressed by him.
“He showed real class in central midfield. The energy, the quality – it’s another big piece of business from Brighton.
“Look at the money they’ve already made with Cukurella and Bisuma – you’d have to say McAllister is next.
“He can come back as a World Cup winner.
He coped with the pressure of the Premier League, he coped with the pressure of Argentina. And I can see him fitting into Antonio Conte’s style at Tottenham too.
He is very aggressive, gets into good areas and takes goals. He would be a huge plus for most Premier League teams.
Signing Mac Allister won’t come cheap
No price tag has been mentioned, but considering the player still has more than two years left on his contract, it will be a significant figure.
However, McAllister may be worried about how former Seagulls standout Yves Bissuma has struggled in north London.
The outstanding midfielder has struggled for starts under Conte, who prefers to partner Pierre-Emile Hoybierg and Rodrigo Bentancourt.
However, Bissouma could get a head start when the Premier League returns to action on Boxing Day.
Conte’s side travel to London rivals Brentford but Bentancourt, who is currently injured, is suspended for the game.
That leaves Conte with a straightforward choice between Bissuma and Oliver Skipp for a tough clash with the Bees.
