After rising from a 40-year high this summer, inflation recently began to decline to 8.3% in August, according to government data. In the year And while that news may seem bad, for those who have stayed with their mutual funds over the past decade, those numbers may be a bit of a speed bump in the rearview mirror.

So which funds have weathered the market pressures of the past 10 years? With an average annual return of 18.62%, all of the 10 best-performing mutual funds outperformed the markets, Morningstar data shows. By way of comparison, stock trackers like the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, or SPY, had a 10-year return of roughly 13%, while the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF, or DIA, had a return of 11.65% over the period. .

Robbie Greengold, a research analyst at Morningstar, said it’s no surprise that they’ve had the highest exposure to industries that have posted high returns over the past decade. “Across all sectors, technology stocks have had the highest returns on average,” he said. “This explains the dominance of technology funds in high-end funds. Chipmakers such as Nvidia and Broadcom have done exceptionally well, which explains the high ratings for Fidelity’s semiconductor-focused funds.”

If one only focuses on short-term returns, mutual funds can easily be overlooked. Over the past 12 months, the same top performers posted a 20.9 percent loss. That’s more than double the losses of 8.63% and 6.6% posted by peers SPY and DIA. That said, Greengold says, one year’s performance data shouldn’t be the deciding factor when analyzing any fund. “It’s extremely challenging to get a lot of insight into a fund’s prospects based on a year’s worth of fund performance.”

One thing that is hard to ignore when looking at these funds, however, is their fees. With an average base expense ratio of 125, mutual funds’ best-returning investors spend more than three times the asset-weighted average expense ratio, which was 0.40% in 2021, according to Morningstar’s latest fee study.

Mutual funds at this level have assets of at least $100 million and an investment minimum of less than $100,000. Daily returns are due from September 9. All information is from Morningstar Direct.
