The RSS chief said that only laws will not improve the Dalits, the mentality has to change

After saying two days ago that the caste system has no relevance in the 21st century, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Sarasanghachalak (chief) Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday assured that his organization (RSS) will fully support and support all those who worship Maharshi Valmiki.

Addressing a function organized by Valmiki Samaj to celebrate Valmiki Jayanti at Nanarao Park in Kanpur, he said, “Without Maharshi Bamiki, the world would not have known Shri Ram. He should be glorified in the entire Hindu community.”

He appealed to the audience to attend the branch and befriend the RSS workers. “Then I am sure that after 10 or 30 years, there will be a Valmiki jubilee that the whole world will celebrate. It will take place in global organizations,” said Bhagwat.

He said the Valmiki community was still very weak and backward. “It has to come forward. Provisions have been made in the constitution. The king (government) looks after the implementation of the law. However, if there is no apanpan (sense of self), it will not benefit those for whom it is meant,” he said.

The RSS chief said that Dr (Bhimrao) Ambedkar made provisions in the Constitution for the betterment of Scheduled Caste communities. “He (Dr Ambedkar) said that now Dalits will sit with everyone. But, provisions alone will not be enough; The mindset needs to be changed, and an awareness brought about,” said Bhagwat.

Quoting Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar in the speech, he said, “Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar said that a system was created, and those who were called untouchables, would get equal rights. But this alone will not work; The heart must be changed (the mind must be changed). Dr. Saheb (Ambedkar) said that the system provided political and economic freedom … but it will only be meaningful and material when there is social freedom.”

“… So, in 1925, another Dr. Saheb (Dr. K. B. Hedgewar, founder of RSS) came from Nagpur and started working to develop that sense of belonging (bhava) and social harmony (samaj samarasta),” Bhagwat said.

The RSS chief said that he had attended Valmiki Samaj functions several times in the past, but this was the first time he was participating in the Valmiki Jayanti function. RSS volunteers from 21 district units of the Kanpur region took part in the Path Sanchan (padayatra) program at Company Bagh crossing in the city.

Most of the Valmiki community in Uttar Pradesh consists of people from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community. SCs have long been a strong vote base for the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party.
