Noel Whelan Backed Tottenham after ‘impressive’ Argentina star Alexis McAllister’s performance at the World Cup.
The former Leeds striker is speaking exclusively Football Insiderclaimed there is “no doubt” the 23-year-old could be Brighton’s latest big-money export, following the summer sales of Mark Cucurella and Yves Bissuma.
According to the Spanish publication Fichage (December 14), Tottenham are in a “four-way battle” to land McAllister in January – along with Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Juventus.
The midfielder has started each of the Seagulls’ 14 Premier League games this season – scoring five goals.
He was also a key player for Argentina at the World Cup in Qatar, scoring once in five to help his country to the final after their opening loss to Saudi Arabia.
McAllister is out of contract at the Amex Stadium in June 2025 after joining for £7million in 2019.
When asked if he is good enough for a move to Tottenham, Whelan told Football InsiderEvan Kingsbury: “There’s no doubt about it, I was very impressed with him.
“He showed real class in central midfield. The energy, the quality – it’s another big piece of business from Brighton.
“Look at the money they’ve already made with Cukurella and Bisuma – you’d have to say McAllister is next.
He can return as a World Cup winner.
“He’s coped with the pressure of the Premier League, he’s coped with the pressure of Argentina – and I can see him suiting Antonio Conte’s style at Tottenham as well.
He is very aggressive, gets into good areas and takes goals. He would be a huge plus for most Premier League teams.
