LG is true to its promise to keep its devices up-to-date

It’s been nearly two years since LG shut down the smartphone business, but the company has remained true to its promise of updating its latest Android phones. This year, the company rolled out Android 12 to a handful of eligible devices, including the LG G8X ThinQ, LG V50 ThinQ, LG V60, LG Wing, and LG Velvet. The LG Wing and LG Velvet will be able to run Android 13, so the company has announced plans for next year’s software update.

In a recent post on its support forum, LG said it will ship Android 13 to the LG Velvet in Q1 2023. The software update plan doesn’t say when the LG Wing will receive the Android 13 update, but LG says it will. Android security updates for four devices: LG Wing, LG Q61, LG Q92 5G and LG Q52 5G next season.

This firmware release period only applies to LG’s domestic market in South Korea, so if you’re in another region, you’ll have to wait a little longer to receive the latest updates. Based on this year’s launch schedule, we expect LG to roll out the Android 13 update for the LG Velvet to other regions in the second quarter. The LG Wing received the Android 12 update a few months ago, so users may have to wait a little longer to receive the Android 13 update.

Despite the long wait, it’s great to see that LG is making good on its promises and delivering Android platform updates and security updates to its devices. However, Android 13 could be the last major OEM update and users will have to rely on custom ROMs if they want to update to future versions of Android.
