ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking postponement of the local government (LG) elections in Islamabad.
In its petition before the IHC, the PML-N had asked the court to postpone the LG polls in the federal capital on the grounds of increasing the number of union councils.
The party asked the court to accept the request for early trial.
The federal government on Tuesday surprised candidates and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) by increasing the number of union councils (UCs) in Islamabad 10 days ahead of the local body polls.
The federal government has announced an increase in the number of UCs in the federal capital area after the federal government approved the amendment to the number of union councils.
The notification said that under the Local Bodies Act, the demarcation of Union Councils should be based on the population of Islamabad, thereby increasing the number of union councils from the existing 101 to 125.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced that the elections will be held on December 31 as per schedule.
“The Election Commission is exercising its powers in accordance with Article 140 A (2), Article 218, Section (3), Article 219, Section “d”, Article 222, Section 219, and other provisions of the 2017 Election Law. “Decided to proceed with the election process as the Act violates Section 4 (4) of the Islamabad Metropolitan Local Government Act, 2015, notwithstanding the federal government’s notification dated 19-12-2022,” read the ECP’s order.
