Perry: Patriots leaders encourage Mack Jones to be more vocal appeared first on NBC Sports Boston

TUCSON, Ariz. — If there was any question about whether Patriots players were happy with Mack Jones’ leadership style, one of the team’s leaders over the last decade seemed to put them to rest this week.

Matthew Slater is in Year 12 to captain the Patriots. He saw a lot of emotion from his teammates – both on and off the field. Jones has certainly gotten his fair share of attention for his presence on the field over the past two weeks, as he’s had very public disagreements with the coaching staff during games against the Bills and Cardinals.

Perry: Mack Jones’ praise of Josh McDaniels is in a noteworthy context

But if Slater was worried about the second-year quarterback and first-year Patriots captain showing emotion, he didn’t show it after practice Wednesday at the University of Arizona.

“I think he’s continuing to find his voice,” Slater said of Jones. “I think one thing is Devin [McCourty] And I really encourage him to practice his voice more. It’s tough sometimes when you have a guy like Devin. You feel like you always have to put it off.

“I think Devin was really on purpose saying, ‘Hey, this is your team. You have to talk. You’ve got to take ownership.”

“But he’s done really well in that regard. It’s great to watch him continue to grow in that role. I know we’ll be looking to him for that leadership, and he’s done a great job.”

Slater noted that after working on the field Wednesday, it was Jones who addressed his teammates informally when he urged them to try to stick to their routine as closely as possible despite being on the road.

What reporters heard from Slater is just a continuation of the praise Jones has received from teammates — especially veteran teammates — over the past two years. Jones’ recent handling of adverse situations has earned him some criticism, but apparently not from the players he shares the locker room with.
