Reacting to the governors’ opposition to the LG Autonomy Bill, the President of the Local Government Association of Nigeria, Kolade Alabi, said majority of the governors he spoke to were not opposed to the idea.

He said, “Independence of local administration will definitely be realized. The best way we can develop this country is to bring governance from below. Any other method will not work. If we all want Nigeria to prosper, we need local content. We now need to start thinking about what to do from the bottom up.

“We have to decentralize and decentralize, that’s how it should be. Morocco is succeeding because of the right approach to governance. I don’t know any governor who opposes local government autonomy.

”But what I do know is that a number of governors I’ve met with all want local government autonomy. Any governor who wants to make Nigeria prosperous must recognize the autonomy of LGs. It will definitely come true because that is the only way we can improve the lives of Nigerians.”
