Athens, Ohio – The Ohio State football team was represented by nine student-athletes on the 2022 Phil Steele Mid-America All-Conference teams.
Redshirt junior guard Kurt RourkeA wide receiver of graduates Sam Wiglus and a sixth-year offensive lineman Hagen serves me All earned first-team offense honors, and a redshirt freshman running back Sieh Bangura Named third team offense. Redshirt senior Kay Thompson Represents the Bobcats on the third team defense while a redshirt senior defensive end Jack McCrory and sixth year security Tarik Drake Earned fourth team defense. Rourke (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) went 244-for-353 for 3,256 runs, totaling 25 strikeouts in 11 games. The redshirt junior made program history against Fordham (Sept. 24) by rushing for 527 yards, breaking a record set in 1983. He is also second in program history in both passing yards and a season. season. On the ground, Rourke rushed for 249 yards on 74 carries and scored four touchdowns. His performance earned him numerous accolades, highlighted by being named the MAC Offensive Player of the Year, the Vern Smith Leadership Award and the 2022 Cornish Trophy runner-up, as well as earning First Team All-MAC honors. Twice named Manning Award Star of the Week and was a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award. Rourke was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week three times and once received MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honors.
Wiglus (Brecksville, Ohio) leads receivers with 11 touchdowns on 69 catches and 850 yards. The graduate opened the Bobcats’ homecoming game against Akron (Oct. 8) with an impressive 75-yard catch and scored Ohio’s first six points with just 12 seconds remaining. His breakout performance earned him first-team All-MAC honors.
Meservey (Tulsa, Okla.) started all 13 games for Ohio, averaging 31.92 points per game, 138.9 rushing yards and 285.31 passing yards per game. This season, the Bobcats offense has run 885 plays, scoring 51 touchdowns for 5,515 yards. Against Fordham (Sept. 24), the offense set a program record with 692 total yards. Meserv’s play earned him first-team All-MAC honors.
Bangura (Bowie, Md.) leads the Bobcats on the ground with 12 touchdowns on 197 attempts and 940 rushing yards. Against Akron (Oct. 8), the redshirt freshman scored four touchdowns, three of them rushing. Through the air, Bangura scored 208 yards and two touchdowns. He was named the MAC Freshman of the Year, earned All-MAC Third Team honors and was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week after performances against Akron and Western Michigan (Oct. 15).
Thompson (Barberton, Ohio) leads the team in tackles (96), assists (51) and solo tackles (45). Starting all 13 games, he also recorded 6.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one interception, three pass breakups, five quarterback hurries, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. Thompson earned MAC Defensive Player of the Week twice and was named All-MAC Third Team Defensive.
McCrory (Springfield, Ohio) is an integral part of Ohio’s defense, starting in all 13 games for the Bobcats. The defensive end leads the team in quarterback hurries (9) and fumbles forced (3). He recorded 56 tackles, 25 of which were solo, along with 7.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, three pass breakups and two fumble recoveries. Against Akron (Oct. 8), McCrory scored a 13-yard fumble recovery to give the Bobcats a healthy 48-20 lead over the Zips. McCrory was named to the All-MAC third team.
Drake (Levittsburg, Ohio) played in 11 games this season, starting 10 of them. He recorded 49 tackles, 30 of which were solo. He also has three interceptions, four pass breakups and one forced fumble. Against Bowling Green (Nov. 22), Drake had two interceptions. He was named All-MAC Third Team for his performance this season.
Wakos (Avon, Ohio) is having a strong freshman season for the Bobcats, appearing in all 13 games. He went 19-of-23 from the field and 48-of-49 on PATs for a total of 104 points. Against Western Michigan (October 15), his 55-yard field goal set a personal best and also tied him for the third-longest field goal in program history. Wakos earned All-MAC second-team offensive honors as a placekicker, earned CFN Freshman All-American third-team honors and was twice named MAC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Wilburn (Nelsonville, Ohio) played in 12 games for Ohio this season. He is the Bobcats’ leading kick returner, recording 653 yards on 28 carries. His longest punt return was against Fordham (Sept. 24), a 98-yard touchdown run. Wilburn’s performance this season earned him first-team All-MAC honors.
