In addition to the slimmed-down Mac Pro, Apple is likely planning new external displays for 2023. These new monitors, including the updated Apple Pro Display XDR, will incorporate Apple Silicon.

According to anonymous sources familiar with the plans, BloombergMark Gurman reported that Apple isn’t just working on new computers for 2023. In addition to the rumored Mac Pro redesign, Mac mini and MacBook Pro models, Gurman understands that Apple is planning new external displays.

Sources indicate that the Cupertino-based tech giant is developing “multiple new outdoor monitors.” These include the new, updated Pro Display XDR that first debuted with the current Intel Mac Pro in 2019.

The updated Pro Display XDR may arrive later than the new Mac Pro, however, as Apple is further ahead in PC development. However, Gurman points out that the new monitors will include Apple Silicon chips.

Including Apple Silicon, as the company did with its Studio Display, helps the monitor rely less on CPU and GPU resources from the attached computer.

Apple silicon benefits for external monitor

Apple’s Studio Display has an A13 Bionic chip that allows it to handle a number of functions entirely inside the monitor. These include Spatial Audio and center stage support for the display’s built-in webcam.

The current Studio Display offers a 27-inch screen with 5K resolution and a 12 MP Ultra Wide camera. The Pro Display XDR offers a 32-inch screen with 6K resolution, but no built-in camera.

By adding Apple Silicon to the new, updated Pro Display XDR, Cupertino can add a webcam as well as other features without taxing the Mac monitor attached to it.

As for the other monitors mentioned, display industry consultant Ross Young noted that Apple will release a new 27-inch monitor in early 2023. This display, with a 27-inch mini-LED panel, could be a new studio screen with ProMotion support.
