Seoul, Korea-based LG Innotek has developed a new lens for DMS and advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) applications. Their distinguishing feature is that the company has applied plastic and glass inside the lens, while other lenses use only glass to prevent structural deformation due to temperature changes or external factors. The high-performance hybrid lens is said to have reduced size and thickness, and is priced competitively with existing products on the market.

New high power hybrid lenses are 20-30% thinner than full glass products. The company says the new lens will give automakers more flexibility in vehicle design as in-car cameras are increasingly used.

Overcoming challenges with plastic

LG Innotek emphasized that the high-performance hybrid lens maintains constant performance regardless of temperature and can accurately recognize objects. Plastic expands and contracts, making it less stable than glass, making it difficult to make rigid lenses out of plastic.

Plastics vary in performance and shape depending on heat and pressure. For this reason, the introduction of plastic into automotive lenses where safety is a priority was a big challenge. This is because vehicle components must maintain their performance in a variety of driving environments, including dry deserts, extreme cold, and extreme heat.

“As they get thinner, they have the advantage of greater freedom of interior and exterior design,” said a company representative. “The higher the level of self-driving, the more sensors will be used,” said a company representative. Therefore, it is important to reduce the size of the parts.”

Furthermore, because the camera modules are placed on the roof of the car rather than on the dashboard, car manufacturers require lenses that hide from prying eyes.

According to Strategy Analytics, the global self-driving camera market is expected to grow from $3.28 billion in 2021 to $6.7 billion in 2025, growing at a CAGR of around 17%.
