Nashville, Tenn. (December 23, 2022) – The Nashville District Corps of Engineers celebrates Christmas throughout December by holding a Christmas Party “Round Robin” and a Holiday Reflection Watch Party at the District Headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee.
The staff prepared different dishes for a round-robin event held on December 8 and participated in a Christmas-themed door decoration contest. On December 15, the staff reflected on Christmas Past by watching old Nashville District Christmas Play production videos.
“It’s been a few years since we’ve been able to hold these events due to COVID, but it’s been great to have everyone back in the office so we’re all able to come together to celebrate the holiday season ,” said equal employment opportunity expert David Clausen.
Clausen, who wore a red suit with a festive Santa Claus print, said he enjoys this time of year and the holiday spirit that comes with it. “Coming into the office and seeing everyone’s holiday sweaters and outfits, as well as sharing their favorite holiday foods, is a unique experience that brings us together like a family.”
Each department set up a small food serving station filled with their favorite homemade food, treats and drinks. Employees used to go to other departments with plates in hand, take whatever food items interested them.
Mechanical engineer Paul Tribble and his father John Tribble, retired Nashville district technical support branch chief, attend a birthday cake-cutting ceremony for employees born in December, along with supervisory electrical engineer David Mistakovich.
“Working for the Corps for over 30 years and now that my son is here as well, it has been a great honor. I have always enjoyed the camaraderie promoting these events and look forward to celebrating this wonderful holiday season with good food and good people. Happy to be here to celebrate together,” said John Tribble.
Earlier this month, employees interested in participating in the Holiday Door Decorating Contest brought in art supplies and Christmas decorations to create holiday-themed murals in hopes of winning this year’s prize.
During the round-robin, employees from departments outside the Corps of Engineers viewed various door decorations before choosing their top three favorites. The Program and Project Management Division got the third position, the Operations Division got the second position and the Office of Public Affairs got the first position.
Holiday celebrations kick off on December 15 for the Holiday Reflections Watch Party. Employees enjoyed popcorn and other treats as Equal Employment Opportunity Manager Stephanie Coleman took a trip down memory lane, recalling funny moments and employees involved in the presentations.
“When I came on board in September 1987, the annual luncheons were already happening, and the Castle Club, an employee organization that sponsored the luncheons, would perform things like music and poetry. We didn’t start the annual tradition until I was asked to write and produce,” Coleman said.
The last Christmas play was in 2019. Due to COVID and other emergent circumstances, the play was put on hold. Coleman said the watch party for this year is meant to remind employees of the fun they can look forward to next year’s production.
“We’re hoping to plan a play for next December, but before that, we may have a surprise waiting for the staff in the spring, something fun we’ll be doing at our district commander, Lt. Col. Sahl’s next duty station.” But go on before you can,” Coleman said.
Watch party participants included new corps staff who had never seen Christmas play productions and veteran corps staff who had acted in previous plays.
Executive Officer for Congressional Liaison Joanne Mann, who has been a part of about ten Nashville District plays, said her favorite play was “It’s a Wonderful Life” and she was honored to play George Bailey.
“Reminiscing about former colleagues through plays was wonderful. It reminded me how much fun work can be. I would love to be involved in future plays as we get back to this great tradition,” said Mann.
Both new employees and veteran employees have expressed their interest in being involved in future productions, which will return in 2023.
“The Nashville District is unique in many ways, especially in the way it makes employees feel like family. The annual Lunch and Play quickly became one of the family events that employees really looked forward to, and its talked about it for months after it was over.
