Government Model Engineering College (MEC) has set aside 50 cents at its campus in Thrikkakara to set up a Center of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Robotics and Automation.

APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) has set aside 10 crores for the first phase of the project. The center will come up on an area of about 60,000 square feet.

The center is proposed as a separate entity under the university to conduct advanced research in AI, ML, robotics and automation. It will be run by a team of highly motivated experts engaged in generation, application and dissemination of new knowledge, said Dr. Jacob Thomas V, Principal.

The center will have independent infrastructural capacity and resources to enable collaborative research in engineering disciplines. It will focus on relevant issues of local relevance and can create global solutions, he added.

The Center aims to achieve excellence in infrastructural capacity, resource mobilisation, research capability and generation of amazingly fresh knowledge. It will also synergize the research activities of the school being set up by the university and also catalyze research activities under the research centers of the affiliated institutions.

Apart from MEC, KTU has decided to set up Center of Excellence at Government Engineering College (GEC), Kannur and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology (RIT), Kottayam. The center at GEC will focus on sustainable engineering and carbon neutrality. RTI’s facility will undertake advanced teaching and research in emerging materials and infrastructure.
