What’s going on for Kira Mack? The band’s first three singles charted on Planet Rock Radio’s A list. In July they hit the Steelhouse Festival (their biggest show to date). Pre-orders for their debut album have been healthy Chaos is calling, which was released in November. The same month they embarked on their first UK tour and have just finished a run of dates with The Sweet. And all this without a label behind them, all from their own backs and from their own pockets.
“My mom is our bookkeeper,” says singer Rhiannon Keira Hill, aka Keira Mack. “None of the five of us can be trusted with money!”
Rounding out the band are guitarist/songwriter Joe Worrall, guitarist Alex Novakovich, bassist Brett Barnes and the amazing young drummer Max Ryhead. Hill met Worrall in 2015 when they were both studying at a music college in Manchester, and they shared a love of Black Stone Cherry, Alter Bridge and Nickelback.
“I don’t care what anybody says,” Hill insists, “Go in [Kroeger, Nickelback frontman] continued. He knows his business. It just has magic.”
There’s also a little magic in Kira Mack’s own glossy, modern riff-rock. A one-way ticket is a bolt-on radio anthem with a strumming guitar hook, a big chorus and a country-rock twang. “Your influence always shows,” Hill reflects. “Rock is always changing. There’s stuff like Måneskin and Yungblud, but then there’s classic rock – Dirty Holly, Dorothy and Alter Bridge – and we’re better off with that side of things because that’s what we love.
Born and bred in Stoke, Hill is warm and earthy; On record, on video and on stage, he’s a firecracker, a real presence. While on the covers circuit in the 2010s, she played her share of girl-on-guitar gigs, and after too many bookers assumed she was a Rihanna tribute, she adopted the name Kira Mack.
After college, he sang on cruise ships, singing everything from AC/DC to Miranda Lambert to Wham! When he finally came ashore in 2019, Worrall was waiting for him, with a pile of new songs and a plan. The hard work they’ve put in since then is starting to pay off.
“We’re called Kira Mac, but it’s not my band,” Hill/Mac emphasizes. “It’s also a group of boys and we’re a solid group. It’s a tight-knit, family atmosphere.”
