Patriots coach Bill Belichick says he didn’t call Hail Mary on the final play of Sunday’s disastrous loss because he thought they were too far out of the end zone. But Patriots quarterback Mack Jones believes he could complete the pass.

The Patriots had the ball at their own 45-yard line, which initially started as a punt but turned into a fumble that Raiders defensive end Chandler Jones returned for the game-winning touchdown. When Jones was asked on WEEI if the layoff would be far from over, Jones replied, “No.”

“No. I think we obviously had a plan in that situation. You have to think about everything in these situations,” Jones said. “It’s something [Belichick] He did, and that’s his job, and he’s been doing it for a long time, but whatever the play is, I’m going to take it and I’m going to do it to the best of my ability. If it was a Hail Mary, it was a Hail Mary. If it was a run, it was a run. This is what I always say to myself no matter the situation: What is my job and how do I do it? And I just try to keep it very simple, let it go, throw it away, or run away on its own. So I have three options. I think it’s one of those things that we have to learn from to get better, but there’s a lot more to it than just shooting. There are other things that go into it. “

A Hail Mary is always a long shot, and the most likely outcome would be for the Patriots to not complete it and then go to overtime. That would still be a better option.
