Mac growth is the only moment in a declining PC market – IDC | Jobs Vox

According to a new report from IDC, the Mac’s dramatic growth was the only highlight in the global PC market in the third quarter of this year.

It shows that Mac shipments grew by more than 40% year-over-year, while every other major brand saw their shipments during the same period…

IDC says the overall market is down 15% year over year.

The decline continued in the traditional PC market as global shipments totaled 74.3 million units in the third quarter of 2022 (3Q22), according to preliminary results from International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. Cooling demand and uneven supply led to a 15.0% YoY decline.

However, the company emphasizes that the trend is still influenced by very high demand during the pandemic and that the latest shipping numbers are still well above pre-pandemic levels.

The company’s market intelligence data shows a stark picture in which Apple was the only winner, although the company remained in fourth place.

The data shows that Apple increased its shipments (expressed in thousands of units) from 7.1 million in the third quarter of last year to 10 million in the same quarter this year. At a time when all other major brands were contracting, the Cupertino company increased its market share from 8.2% to 13.5%.

IDC says it still tracks average selling prices (ASP) quarter by quarter, but it has seen one trend: ASP has risen five quarters in a row compared to the first quarter of this year.

The likely reason for this is that during component shortages, manufacturers prioritized their most expensive (and highest margin) models. Even so, IDC reports an ASP of $910, so Apple stands well above the overall market and almost certainly has the highest margin.

Apple is nearing the end of switching its entire Mac line from Intel to Apple Silicon chips, creating significant demand for new models that are more powerful and energy efficient. Additionally, the ever-popular MacBook Air received a major redesign in June.

The new Air design comes in Silver, Space Grey, Starlight, Midnight and Gold. The previous teardrop wedge shape has been replaced with a simpler, flat-faced chassis. Just like the 2021 MacBook Pro, the display has also moved closer to the edges with the addition of a display notch.

The Air is 11.3mm thin, features a Magic Keyboard Touch ID power button, and a MagSafe back for secure magnetic charging. Apple claims the new MacBook Air gets about 18 hours of continuous video playback on a battery.

The slimmer bezels also saw the screen size increase to 13.6 inches.

Apple also won the customer satisfaction battle, beating Samsung, Acer, Asus and Dell in the latest American Customer Satisfaction Index.
