First, a pair of coaches announce the press pros for the 2022 Coach of the Year honors in regional football — New Bremen’s Chris Schmidt and Marion Local’s Tim Goodwin (above).

This has not happened before. This is the first.

But in fairness, not one, but two area coaches were selected for the honor Professional Press Coach of the Year region in high school football in 2022. New Bremen’s Chris Schmidt led Cardinals to second Division VII state title and second in three years; and Marion Local’s Tim Goodwin Led the Flyers to their 13th OHSAA state titles spread across Divisions V, VI and VII, extending an amazing streak of dominance and leading as the OHSAA’s all-time leader in football titles won by a single school.

It’s rare, we know. Make a decision, some might say…one or the other. But how do you choose?

To make Schmidt’s case, he led an underrated team in August and led the Cardinals (13-3) through the Midwest Athletic Conference to a 7-3 regular season record…then as the #5 seed in the 28 Region, went on to defeat the #1 seed (Ansonia), #2 seed (Fort Loram), #4 seed in Region 26 (Lima Centra Catholic) and finished it all off with #1 state seed Warren John F. Kennedy in the Division VII final game, 38-6, jumped out to a 24-0 halftime lead before JFK could even catch its breath.

“We’re not used to playing teams that can make dynamic plays on every snap,” said one JFK official. “New Bremen hit us early and our kids never recovered.”

It also marked the second title in three years for Schmidt and the Cardinals, the second title game win at JFK, and adds another chapter to both MAC football and football’s incredible cultural turnaround that was once one of the conference’s most storied. threatened football members. As recently as ten years ago, there was talk of abandoning football entirely in New Bremen.

“It’s one of those things where I almost have to hold myself back,” Schmidt said. “Being here for the second time… I mean, two years ago (with Covid) was amazing. It was such a great memory. If that happens, I feel extremely blessed.”

Like the New Bremen community, it won its second fall sports state title in a month (they won their third volleyball title in November) and where football is no longer an endangered species. Instead, it’s now a sport brimming with enthusiasm, participation and talent since Schmidt took over the program in 2015.

“Back then we were lucky to have seniors who didn’t give up and who wanted to prove something,” he says. “And since then there have been others (Mitchell Hayes, David Homan and Hunter Schaefer) who have proven what you can achieve through dedication and faith.

Since 2013, Moeller Trucking, Inc. Congratulations to the Marion Flyers for their unmatched record in OHSAA high school football.

Tim Goodwin’s story for now Legendary in Ohio high school football, to the point where those in the know wonder what remains to be proven or done.

But #1-ranked Marion Local has accomplished something in the 2022 season en route to another record win — its 13th — thanks to a defense so stout that it posted 11 shutouts during a 16-0 campaign, including six. Row September 30 through November 4 and set a school record by holding opposing teams to just 30 points during the regular season. Additionally, they set a playoff mark of allowing just 9 points in six games, which included winning the division in 2021. V champion Versailles, #2 seed Allen East and six-time OHSAA champion Kirtland (#2 seed) in the Division VI title game, 14-6.

Tim Goodwin led the Marion Local Flyers to a record 13 OHSAA state titles…and an unheard of playoff mark of 96 wins against just 12 losses.

“We knew the defense was going to be tough,” Kirtland coach Tiger LaVerde said. “What makes it difficult? It’s physical, fast and well-coached.”

The 14-6 win over Kirtland also tied the all-time streak between the two schools at two wins, and ironically Kirtland is part of one of the OHSAA’s most notable footnotes. With an incredible 13-3 finals record in sixteen games, Kirtland is responsible for two of those losses, in 2015 and 2019. Columbus Grove owns the second, back in 2003.

Counting down to the 2022 season, according to OHSAA records, Goodwin and the Marion Local now own an incredible playoff record of 96 wins and 12 losses, the most dominant in Ohio football among teams with at least fifty playoff appearances.

Their 13th wasn’t as dominant as the previous twelve, but that only put a smile on Goodwin’s face when he talked about it after the fact.

“That’s what happens when you accept a challenge,” he said in his post-match press conference.

“But it’s the kind of game we’re excited about. We love competition. We’d rather win a game like this than with the clock running. When it was announced in the spring that we would both be in Division VI, it became a challenge. We knew we had to beat Kirtland if we were going to win the Gold Cup.

And the saga continues, with a cupboard full of talent and experience for another campaign, another title launch, Goodwin likes to say: “I don’t really dwell on the latest title. In fact, I’m usually thinking about the changes we’ll make next year on the bus ride home from Canton.”

And that’s how a conference with small communities like Maria Stein and New Bremen can own 41 football titles (149 overall) since its inception in 1973, and average two OHSAA titles per year over the past decade.

The impact of two football coaches who are different in experience and time spent, but so similar in their impact, vision and belief that success is inevitable with belief and commitment… it’s impossible to pick just one as the 2022 Pres Pros Region Coach of the Year. year.

We congratulate you and wish you the best of luck in the future New Bremen’s Chris Schmidt…and Marion Local’s Tim Goodwin!
