Alexis McAllister hailed as ‘humbled’ Lionel Messi as the best player in history after playing a key supporting role in Argentina’s World Cup triumph.

In perhaps the biggest final in the tournament’s history, Messi’s side won 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw with France.

Messi opened the scoring from the spot to give Lionel Scallone’s side the lead in extra time before slotting home from the spot.

Argentina would go on to win but Messi’s Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick. After leading Lionel Scallone’s side to victory, the 35-year-old was hailed by midfielder Rodrigo de Paul as “the best ever…no doubt about it”.

Asked what made the difference in the final, Brighton’s McAllister said: “It’s always Messi, always Messi. He is fantastic.

“Words can’t explain how I feel right now, I think this team gave everything on the field, so I’m very happy with the result.”

McAllister shone in the finals and played a big part in setting up Angel Di Maria’s goal as Argentina went 2-0 up at half-time. They pulled back Mbappe’s brace with 97 seconds to go in extra time and replaced McAllister before the Frenchman completed his hat-trick to cancel out Messi’s stoppage-time goal.

With Messi now adding football’s biggest prize to his trophy cabinet, he has – in McAllister’s eyes – cemented his place as the best.

“I think he is the best player in the world, the best player of all time,” he said. “He’s an amazing guy, he’s a really good guy, he’s humble, so he has everything to be the best player in history, so it’s amazing to share the dressing room with him and I’m very grateful.”
