M2 Mac mini: We know everything here | Jobs Vox

[ad_1]

This week, Apple announced new iPad models, as well as a new generation of Apple TV 4K. However, according to recent rumors, the company has also been working on new Macs – including a next-generation Mac mini equipped with the M2 chip. Read on as we break down everything we know about the new Mac mini.

The current state of the Mac mini

The Mac mini is the most affordable Mac available in Apple’s lineup. It is a compact desktop computer that comes without peripherals because you can connect it to any keyboard, mouse or display. The Mac mini has become extremely popular for server-related use because of its form factor, and it’s also a good option for those looking for their first Mac computer.

The current generation Mac mini, also known as the M1 Mac mini, was introduced in November 2020. Although the design is the same as previous models, the latest Mac mini is available with Apple’s M1 chip.

By default, it comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but users can customize it at Apple’s online store with 16GB of RAM and 2TB of storage. Interestingly, Apple still sells the Mac mini, which is equipped with an Intel processor, which can have 64 GB of RAM. Then again, this model was probably kept in the line until today because it’s a popular choice for Mac mini servers.

Mac mini prices start at $699 in the US.

M2 Mac mini rumours

The M1 Mac mini was introduced alongside the M1 MacBook Air and M1 MacBook Pro. While these two MacBook models were already updated with the M2 chip earlier this year, the Mac mini is still waiting to be updated with Apple’s latest chip. And, there are plenty of rumors about the next generation of Apple’s compact desktop computer.

back in march 9 to 5 Mac Exclusively reported details on the new Mac mini. According to our sources, Apple has been working on at least two new versions of the computer. One of them, codenamed J473, is powered by an M2 chip with an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, just like the chip in the 2022 MacBook Air.

As we already know, the performance gains of the M2 chip compared to the M1 are not impressive. Of course, the differences will be more noticeable for those coming from older Macs or PCs with Intel processors.

But 9 to 5 Mac Sources also said that Apple is planning to introduce a more powerful version of the Mac mini. Codenamed J474, this Mac mini will be equipped with a faster M2 Pro chip – a yet-to-be-announced variant of the M2 with a 12-core CPU. It should be the same chip that powers the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Last year, YouTuber Jon Prosser reported that Apple would adopt a new, even more compact industrial design for this more powerful Mac mini model. However, it is unclear whether this new design will come to the entry-level M2 model. Bloomberg Mark Gurman also confirmed rumors of new Mac minis with M2 and M2 Pro chips in the works.

When will it be announced?

There aren’t many details or rumors about when the M2 Mac mini will be officially announced by Apple. However, there are a few hints that point to a release later this year.

a few days ago Gourmet It has been claimed that Apple plans to release new MacBook Pro models “in the near future”. The reporter also briefly mentioned the new M2 Mac mini, so new Macs could be announced in November. Apple is also set to announce the first Mac Pro with an Apple Silicon chip soon, which means the company could hold its last special event in 2022.
