The Election Commission hopes to publish the Gazette calling for nominations for the local government elections before January 5, said Election Commission Chairman Nimal Punchikheva.
Speaking to the Daily News yesterday, he said the newspaper in question must be produced by January 5 by law and his commission is bound to meet that deadline.
When asked whether the committee faced any obstacles in publishing the relevant newspaper, the chairman said, “Let’s wait. It is our duty to hold elections. “What is the point of the committee if it cannot fulfill its duties?”
On Wednesday evening, the election committee appointed supervisors and assistants who returned to the territory of the electoral district of the City Council. The Gazette published under the Local Authority Elections Ordinance was signed by five Commissioners.
The Election Committee held a meeting with the district secretaries yesterday, and today the deputies and assistants of the district election committee were called for another meeting.
The extended period for all local government bodies expires in March.
