PESHAWAR: Elected representatives of local governments on Thursday declared December 18 and March 31 as black days to seek funding and devolution.

In a press conference held at the Peshawar Press Club, elected representatives led by Mardan mayor Himayatullah Mayar and Azizullah Khan said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has not provided them with the required funds. They said that despite repeated assurances, the provincial government was using delaying tactics to hand over power to the elected body.

They said that on behalf of the Mayor, Chairman of the National Assembly and the Action Committee of the National Assembly, it was decided to celebrate Black Day on December 19 and March 3 throughout the province.

They said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf provincial government has not given anything to the people but made false promises and cheated the elected representatives of local bodies. They said that the Prime Minister had promised to fulfill his demands within two weeks, but he did not fulfill his promise.

“Many years have passed and no funds are available, so the government is trying to cheat us,” they said.

They said that a related case is pending in the Peshawar High Court and the state government is yet to respond to their queries. They complain that the state government is not disbursing money to the federal government, but it is violating the rules by deducting funds from local bodies.

The provincial government is not ready to strip local bodies of their statutory powers and empower them for unknown reasons, local government representatives said. They said that the provincial administration made a mockery of the people’s mandate.

If they do not fulfill their demands, they have threatened to start a protest movement throughout the province.
