Yesterday Apple published a report titled, “LG Innotek, Apple’s Largest Optical Partner, Unveils Ultra-Compact Optical Zoom Camera Module Launched at CES in January.” Apple’s suppliers are notoriously quiet about working with Apple, which is why we noted in yesterday’s report that “LG Innotek is likely to remain Apple’s supplier for the iPhone 15 optical zoom module.” Thanks to a new report published this morning, we can be a little more confident that the iPhone 15 will use LG Innotek’s new optical zoom camera module.
According to The Elec, LG Innotek plans to invest 1.65 trillion won (US$1.289 billion) in new facilities to manufacture foldable magnifiers and actuators for Apple’s iPhone 15 series to be released next year. LG Innotek’s investment in this new facility appears to be for the production of the corrugated zoom that was first used in Apple’s iPhone 15 series, including the required actuators and other camera modules.
The biggest change in the specifications of the camera module of the iPhone 15 series next year is the use of folding zoom. Folded Zoom is a camera module that bends light through a prism and transmits it to the image sensor, which can reduce the bump on the smartphone’s rear camera.
It is known that Apple is planning to introduce folding zoom in one variant of the iPhone 15 series next year (Pro Max) and in two variants of the iPhone 16 series next year (Pro/Pro Max). LG Innotek will incorporate the actuator technology required for fold zoom. High-resolution images can only be achieved by moving multiple actuating lenses quickly and accurately.”
In a secondary report published by BusinessKorea today, they said, “LG Innotek supplies camera modules for iPhone. The percentage of sales to Apple in LG Innotek’s total sales continues to rise. The percentage increased to 64 percent from 61 percent in 2018. 67 percent in 2019 and 2020, and 75 percent in 2021. Until the third quarter of this year, LG Innotek was dependent on Apple for 74.8 percent of its sales.”
