Kim Kardashian Calls for Inclusion, Honored at CFDA Awards

Kim Kardashian was honored at Monday’s Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards for her shapewear line and used the honor to call for designers to be inclusive for all body shapes.

Kardashian was awarded the first-ever Innovation Award presented by Amazon Fashion for her shapewear brand SKIMS. Co-founder and CEO Jens Grade and Founding Partner and Chief Product Officer Emma Grade also joined Kardashian to accept the inaugural award.

The fashion industry’s equivalent of the Oscars was held in person on Monday night and hosted by actress Natasha Leone and designers and CFDA members Joseph Altuzarra, Gabriela Hearst, Aurora James, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough. The evening commemorated 60 years of American fashion history and fashion organizations.

“Since our launch we’ve focused on shaping the industry to embrace size equality as a trend and diversity as a fixture, and I see a lot of you doing the same,” the Kardashian star told the audience. Includes her sisters Khloe and Kendall and her mother Kris Jenner.

Martha Stewart presented the award to Kardashian, who had to make a hasty announcement when a phone rang just before she began speaking. “Mom, turn off your phone,” Kardashian told Jenner to laughter from the audience.

The Kardashians were fully represented at the show, with Jenner, Khloe Kardashian and Kendall and Kylie Jenner watching as their sister accepted her honor.

This year, Law Roach was honored with a new award recognizing stylists for their work.

“Once upon a time, a queen was born on the South Side of Chicago. A queen who was a fearsome force for good and beauty and who changed the landscape of fashion just because of her,” Kerry Washington recounts the story of Roach’s early life.

He shared with viewers that he watched the 2016 CFDA Awards from behind the scenes as Zendaya’s stylist.

“I watched from the kitchen as the waiters served your food and I just thought to myself, ‘One day I’ll be on that stage.’ I am an example that anything and everything is possible,” said Roach.

Bradley Cooper, Trevor Noah and Christina Ricci were among the other presenters on a night when various designers took home trophies and Lenny Kravitz received the CFDA’s Fashion Icon Award.

“(Kravitz is) effortless, cool, eclectic, fearless,” Cooper said while introducing Kravitz. “Whatever it is, he’s got it. And when it comes to fashion, there is no one else. There is no other musician alive today who wears leather and leopard like Lenny.”

“My mother’s closet was my own personal boutique. I wore scarves, belts, platform boots, bows imitating my heroes from The Jackson Five, Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stones, David Bowie and Miles Davis,” says Kravitz, describing his youth growing up in the late ’60s and ’70s. .

Last year, Zendaya was the youngest person to win the Icon Award. Previous recipients include Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Pharrell Williams, Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez.

Cher also made a surprise appearance to honor stylist Patti Wilson. “Fashion is about being fun and scary and Patti Wilson is fearless,” Cher said.

The Accessory Design Award went to Raul Lopez and the American Emerging Designer Award went to Elena Velez.

In the American designer category, Kathryn Holstein won the womenswear award for KHAITE and Emily Adams Bode won the award for Azla Menswear Designer.

The Board of Trustees Award was presented to Virgil Abloh for the late designer’s contribution to world fashion. The award was accepted by his wife Shannon Abloh, who said “what he was able to do in his short 41 years will inspire us all for decades to come.”
