After the New England Patriots’ unbelievable loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, there aren’t many warm, fuzzy feelings about the team.
Apparently, former wide receiver Julian Edelman is just as unhappy as many Patriots fans.
Edelman, the Super Bowl LIII MVP who played 11 seasons in New England, took special aim at quarterback Mack Jones when speaking on “Inside NFL” on Paramount-plus.
Edelman blasted the second-year signal-caller for both the hit on Raiders linebacker Chandler Jones that could have sent Sunday’s game into overtime and his behavior during plays. He specifically called out Mack Jones for “sad faces” and “getting rid of the coaches.”
Edelman’s comments came in response to former NFL tight end Brandon Marshall defending Jones’ missed tackle, noting that the quarterback never practices kicking.
“You know what, he also doesn’t practice at games and he doesn’t take the coaches and all those little snarky faces and stuff,” Edelman replied. “Like he doesn’t practice it and do it. Why can’t you make a shot? That’s bad.”
It certainly sounds like Edelman’s problem with Jones has less to do with Sunday’s disastrous final game and more to do with his struggles throughout the season.
Jones averaged 210 yards per game through the air and threw seven touchdowns and eight interceptions in 11 games this year. In the loss to the Raiders, he completed just 13 of 31 pass attempts.
Sunday’s loss, the Patriots’ third in the past four games, dropped the team to 7-7 on the season and 24-23 since Tom Brady left to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The silly nature of this latest loss left everyone open to criticism — even six-time Super Bowl champion head coach Bill Belichick. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio wrote this week that “it’s still far from certain Belichick will be back” in 2023.
Jones and the team now need to right the ship quickly if they are to make the playoffs for the first time since Brady’s departure. The Patriots face the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday before closing out the season against the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills.
