JAMMU: Maintaining that human life cannot be compensated for by money, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday announced ex gratia. 5 lakh each to the next of kin of the two civilians who were shot dead near the gate of an army installation in Rajouri. Shortly after the incident on Friday morning, the Indian Army’s Nagrota-based 16th Corps attributed the firing to “unidentified terrorists”.

“What happened in Rajouri is very unfortunate. Condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. The price of life can’t be quantified, but as always, I’m announcing a discount. Five lakhs to each affected family,” Sinha tweeted on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Surinder Kumar and Kamal Kishore, residents of Pahlyana, while another person, Anil Kumar of Uttarakhand, was injured. Kumar and Kishore were cremated in Rajouri on Saturday in the presence of J&K BJP unit president Ravinder Raina, party general secretary Vibodh Gupta, BJP leader Neelam Lange, Rajouri DC Vikas Kundal, DIG Rajouri-Punhal and Dr Haseebur. Leaders of various political parties visited the families of the deceased and demanded an immediate investigation into the incident and adequate compensation to the families of the deceased.

“This is a tragedy and anyone involved must be held accountable. The Army is investigating and the police have started their investigation after registering the case,” J&K BJP president Ravinder Raina told reporters after meeting the families of the deceased in Rajouri.

Representatives of the Pradesh Congress Committee. Led by former Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Ravinder Sharma. and visited the families of the deceased. “We have gone to share the grief of the Dalit families who lost their members in the tragedy. A high-level probe or judicial inquiry is essential to ensure justice for the victims,” said Sharma, the committee’s chief spokesperson.

He said that the Congress has always stood by the armed forces in the fight against terrorism.
