IIT Kharagpur is looking to set up an engineering institute in Malaysia as part of its plan to go global, said its director VK Tiwari. Tiwari said the institute aims to be among the top 10 in the world.

He said, “IIT Kharagpur aims to become the worldwide benchmark in education excellence by establishing IIT Malaysia, which will be a major step for the institute to establish its footprint in the international domain.”

Tiwari, however, did not give any timeline for setting up the new college in Malaysia, nor did it give information on whether it would be a joint venture with any other institution.

He also said that the institute has created a repository of 75 innovations created by its staff and researchers.

Listing IIT Kharagpur’s project innovation success stories in the last two years, he said the ‘CoviRap’ diagnostic kit for coronavirus sold for Rs 6.7 crore, with several other successful new devices earning more than Rs 1 crore.

“We are supporting 25 identified innovations,” he said.

“From Vinod Gupta to Sundar Pichai, many ex-IIT KGPians, numbering in the thousands (of) brought laurels to the institute,” Tiwari said at its 68th convocation on Saturday.

40 distinguished alumni including nine Life Fellows of the Institute were felicitated on the occasion.

Nine students were also handed over gold medals in their respective fields of study.
