odd The Golden Flashes and Northern Illinois Huskies each won five games, but NIU scored a trio of bonus points to lead to an 18-15 Huskies win Sunday at the Kent State Field House.
Jake Ferrey Got the Flashes’ major opener on the right foot in an impressive 9-5 win over Blake West. Ferrey was ranked number two in the MAC going into the match, and West entered as the number three wrestler. Ferry used a series of strikes and several escapes to pull away from West and secure the victory.
Brandon Fenton A 3-1 decision at the venue over Lucian Brink to give the Flashes their first two games on Sunday. Fenton got a takedown at the end of the first period and the wrestlers traded escape points for defense. Another defensive struggle went Northern Illinois’ way at 141 Louis Newell Dropped a 3-1 decision to the MAC’s number three wrestler at 141 in Jayvon Jones.
Kody Komara Used a takedown and a pair of nearfalls to defeat NIU’s Dillon Nichols. Komar got a takedown and his first fall late in the second period. He continued his offensive attack in the third to secure the win and narrowly missed out on a major decision.
The Huskies took the next four matches, with three major decisions being the difference on Sunday. The Flashes won Blake Shaffer and Jacob’s cover Close the dual. Shaffer followed Fenton’s script and won late in the first period, then traded escapes with Jakob Christensen for a 3-1 win. Cover took the opposite approach, with Teresa Aaron’s late shot putting NIU up 2-0 late in the first period. Cover managed an escape with five seconds on the clock to make it 2-1 after the first, then tied it with a second period escape. In the first overtime, Kaver got the leverage on Aaron and was able to take over and earn two points for the upset victory.
Kent State stays at home and returns to the MACC on Friday night against Edinboro. The annual alumni game will begin at 5 p.m
