The 24-year-old starred in Argentina’s famous World Cup run, scoring against Poland and helping Angel Di Maria to a dramatic final victory over France.

Even before the Qatar tournament, the midfielder had been in excellent form for Brighton, scoring five goals in 14 Premier League appearances before the break.

While the south coast club have lofty ambitions of their own, they have proven they are willing to sell their prized assets when big offers come their way.

Ben White joined Arsenal for £50m in 2021, while Mark Cucurella was sold to Chelsea for £62m earlier this year.

Graham Potter’s departure to Chelsea and the subsequent influx of Brighton personnel have naturally linked the Blues with a transfer, while Mikel Arteta has already confirmed that Arsenal will be active in the transfer market.

“He’s a top-four player and the big boys will look at him now and think, ‘We’ve got this’. He’s proven he can play at the highest level and he’s already done that in the Premier League,” Souness wrote in The Daily Mail.

“This guy has very little risk. He can create, score and score goals – that type of player is hard to find.

“At 23 years of age, Brighton will not be able to keep him for long and we wish him the best of luck in trying to negotiate a new contract.”
