People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) will take the government to court if it tries to delay the polls, its Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi said yesterday. Hettiarachchi said yesterday that the Election Commission should announce the date for the Local Council elections. The end of the first week of January.

He said, “According to the Law on Elections and the Constitution, the names of the people elected to the City Council must be announced and the elections held by March 19.

It is obvious that the government is trying to postpone the election, said the executive director of PAFFREL.

“The government claims that holding elections now will have a negative impact on the country. I don’t think that being democratic and transparent is bad for the country. “In any case, the country’s image will be greatly improved in the international system,” he said.

Hettiarachchi said that the Election Commission is interested in conducting the elections. The commission has appointed district repatriation officers and announced their names.

“The commission also met the district repatriation officers. However, we also see that the government is using various tricks to delay the elections. We met Chief Minister Dinesh Gunawardena two weeks ago and told him that if you postpone the elections, we will go to court. The Prime Minister said the vote would not be delayed. “We will see what the government will try to do next week,” he said.

Meanwhile, Manas Makeen, Executive Director of the Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE), said that the City Council elections should be held within the first quarter of 2023.

“We are against the postponement of the election and will work with other election observers to thwart any attempt to postpone the election,” he said.
