Glasgow chef claims chicken tikka masala originated in Scotland

A Glasgow chef has claimed that Britain’s popular chicken tikka masala originated in Scotland, not the UK. Sixty-four-year-old Ahmed Aslam Ali, the founder of Sheesh Mahal, claims to have invented the dish and is now calling on the European Union to grant it “Protected Designation of Origin” status alongside the likes of champagne, Parma ham and Greek feta cheese.

Ali says the creamy, mildly spicy curry was created here in the 1970s to please Scots, but has since become the most popular dish in British restaurants. “Chicken tikka masala was invented in this restaurant, we used to make chicken tikka, and one day a customer said, ‘I’ll have some sauce with it, it’s a bit dry,'” Ali was quoted as saying by The News. Glasgow Labor MP Mohammad Sarwar is now for curry. The EU is taking steps to get legal protection.
