Alexis McAllister is being compared by fans to Argentina legend Juan Roman Riquelme after his impressive performance against France in the World Cup final.

In what was a spectacular final full of twists and turns, Argentina finally came out on top as they beat France 4-2 on penalties to clinch the World Cup title.

Argentina’s starting XI featured many big names, including Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria and Rodrigo de Pauli.

However, one name in particular caught the eye of many at the tournament in Qatar, in the form of Brighton midfielder Mc Allister.

The 24-year-old didn’t start in his side’s shock defeat to Saudi Arabia, but was a constant feature for Lionel Scallone afterwards.

McAllister produced a stunning display in the final that drew fans to compare him to Riquelme, considered one of the best midfielders of his generation.

The comparisons came after a clip of McAllister showing great skill and composure in getting out of tight spots with the ball during the final against France.

One fan said: “Riquelme’s aura has entered McAllister’s body, oh my god, how are you going to play a World Final like that?”

While another fan wrote: “Hey I love Roman but he looks more like Zidane than anyone else.”

A third fan added: “I said to a friend in the game ‘that reminds me of Riquelme’ they can’t take the ball away from him animal!”

After an impressive campaign, many of Europe’s biggest clubs will be looking to lure McAllister away from Brighton.

During Argentina’s celebrations in Buenos Aires, McAllister said: “For me, Brighton are the team that supported me at a very difficult time and it would be disrespectful to talk about other teams.

“I’m a guy who’s very grateful to Brighton.

I know what I think about my club, what I think about people, what I think about my teammates.

Seagulls boss Roberto de Zerbi said: “This competition is very important for them and there is a lot of pressure and I want Alexis to come back when he is ready to play.”
