Delhi LG VK Saxena spoke to Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and sought his help in checking sewage flowing into the Najafgarh drain from several sources in the state, officials said on Wednesday.
Saxena will also visit Chandigarh to meet Khattar and discuss the issue.
The chief minister has assured the LG that the Haryana government will take steps to check the sewage flowing into the Najafgarh drains, officials said.
According to an official statement, Khattar also proposed a joint meeting of officials to address the issue in a comprehensive manner.
The LG along with several other officials will attend the meeting in Chandigarh soon.
The Najafgarh drain receives about 40 percent of the Yamuna’s pollution, which in turn receives 36 percent of the pollution from several drains in Haryana.
While 32 drains, which account for 44 percent of Najafgarh’s pollution, have been partially blocked in the Delhi Jal Board, 52 other drains, which account for 20 percent of Najafgarh’s pollution, are yet to be blocked.
When the Yamuna enters Pallad from Haryana to Delhi, the total number of discharges is 1100, and when it reaches ISBT, after absorbing the discharge from the Najafgarh drain, its bacilli load increases to 2.10 lakh.
Saxena has led the drainage upgrade of Najafgarh and so far around 12 km of drains have been cleaned and upgraded.
