Nashik: District and Sessions Court gave its verdict on Friday capital punishment Chetan Yashwant Pagare (34) and Aman Prakatsinh Jat (31) were convicted of abducting and killing 22-year-old engineering student Bipin Bafna in 2013.
Bafna was abducted on June 8, 2013, from Panchavati area of the city and was stabbed to death 26 times. Public prosecutor Ajay Misar told TOI, “Special MCOCA, District and Sessions Court No. 2 judge Aditi Kadam pronounced the convicts to be hanged by the neck till they die.”
Police said five people, including a woman (then 32), had planned to abduct Bafna, son of Gulabchand Bafna, a food grain trader from Vasant Vihar in Ojhar, and carried out the crime. They took the youth to a flat and demanded a ransom of Rs one crore from his father.
Chetan Pagare (then 25 years) and Aman Prakatsinh Jat (then 22 years) stabbed Bafna to death 26 times on realizing that the ransom money was not received.
The investigation was headed by the then Commissioner of Police Kulwant Kumar Sarangal and by the then ACP Ganesh Shinde and Inspector NK Pingle of the Panchavati Police.
Miser said, “It was a super technical case. The investigation team had to reach the killers from call detail records traced through International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) and service operators. SIM cards of cellphones used during the crime were dumped.” in the Nasrid River.”
While the three accused were acquitted as their role in the murder could not be established, the court held Pagare and Jat guilty of the crime and convicted them on Tuesday. The quantum of sentence was pronounced on Friday.
Miser said, “Punishment and death penalty is important as it will deter other youths from indulging in such crimes. Kidnapping for ransom has become a way to get easy money. Such stringent punishment will act as a deterrent.” I will work.”
Both were sentenced to death for offenses punishable under section 302 (murder), and other provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
