LAHORE: Women for Empowerment (WISE) organized a provincial conference titled “Punjab Local Government Act 2022 and Women’s Representation” at a local hotel on Tuesday.

A large number of women former councilors and LG members from different districts like Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Okara, Kasur, Khanewal and Lahore participated in the event. Speakers at the conference said democracy is incomplete without appropriate and meaningful representation of women in local institutions. “For the last three years, the province has no local government and has been running a bureaucratic show. In the remaining three states, the LG elections have already ended or are about to end and the Punjab government should conduct the LG polls in the state without delay.

Speaking on the occasion, LG expert Zahid Islam said that the local government system has unfortunately been held hostage in the tug-of-war between the two major political parties. Executive Director WISE, Bushra Khaliq, said the Punjab Local Government Act 2022 has nothing to offer women, but elections should be held as scheduled in April 2023. He demanded at least 33% representation of women at all levels of LGs.
